Modern EDF Spin-offs
While Sandlot develops the mainline series, Yuke's has been responsible for three spin-off titles since 2019, each taking the franchise in a different direction.
Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain
Iron Rain is Yuke's first EDF entry and the most tonally different from the Sandlot mainline. Where Sandlot's games embrace B-movie earnestness, Iron Rain adopts a more serious, grounded presentation: grimmer storyline, more detailed character models, and a focus on a more realistic aesthetic within the franchise's inherently absurd premise.
The game introduces new mechanics including a more elaborate upgrade system and different equipment categories. Character customisation allows players to adjust their soldier's appearance more extensively than in mainline entries.
Release: April 11, 2019 (PS4, worldwide); July 17, 2019 (PC via Steam).
Developer: Yuke's • Publisher: D3 Publisher (JP) / XSEED Games (West)
Earth Defense Force: World Brothers
World Brothers takes the opposite approach to Iron Rain. The game uses a voxel-art visual style — blocky, colourful, toy-like — and leans into the franchise's sense of humour with a meta-fictional premise: the Earth itself has been broken into segments by an alien attack, and the EDF must reassemble the world.
The tone is lighthearted and accessible. World Brothers is an excellent entry point for players reluctant to engage with the rawer, less polished mainline entries. Its broad platform release (PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC) also makes it the most accessible EDF title in terms of hardware.
Release: Japan January 14, 2021; West May 27, 2021 (PS4/Switch); June 24, 2021 (PC).
Developer: Yuke's / Sandlot • Publisher: D3 Publisher (JP) / XSEED Games (West)
Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2
World Brothers 2 continues the voxel-art spin-off line. Released worldwide on January 25, 2024 simultaneously on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, making it one of the more globally synchronised EDF releases.
The game expands the World Brothers formula with new characters, missions, and a continued emphasis on co-operative play. The simultaneous worldwide release reflects the franchise's growing international profile.
Release: January 25, 2024 (worldwide).

Yuke's and the EDF Brand
Yuke's is a Japanese studio primarily known for the WWE wrestling game series. Their involvement in EDF was facilitated by D3 Publisher, who sought to expand the franchise with different creative voices while Sandlot focused on the mainline series.
Iron Rain, World Brothers, and World Brothers 2 do not share continuity with the Sandlot mainline. They are separate brand extensions rather than canonical entries. The mainline series remains Sandlot's domain.
